MONTGOMERY, Ala. โ€” The Montgomery Symphony Orchestra is preparing to showcase its biggest shows of the year. With show dates falling on November 14, 2022, and December 16, 2022, patrons can expect an array of music to experience. According to the symphonyโ€™s events and operation manager, Brandy Cole, the November 14 concert is an American composer-focused show.

In this show, guests can expect classical pieces standards like Beethovenโ€™s Symphony No. 7, alongside culture-bending pieces such as The Mississippi Suite, which was composed by the first African American composer, Florence Prince.

The December 16 concert is the annual holiday show, and most popular show of the year. The Holiday Pop concert aims to showcase family-friendly pieces from movies, ELF, Polar Express, and Sleighride.

Patrons can purchase tickets at the box office from the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre, or you call the number listed on the MSO website to buy tickets in advance.

Capri Theatre Hosts Back-to-Back Events for the Film โ€œThe Runnerโ€

MONTGOMERY, Ala. โ€” The Capri Theatre is hosting a film class and a question-and-answer session for the 1984 film โ€œThe Runner.โ€ Both events are scheduled for October 25 at 6:30 p.m.

The film class will be taught by John Martello, a film historian. Following the class, there will be a Q&A with Bruce Goldstein, the founder of Rialto. Alongside him will be Madjid Niroumand, the main characterโ€™s actor.

Both events are being hosted by the Capri Theatre but will be held on Zoom. Members of thetheatre will only need to pay $12. Non-members are required to pay $15 for entry.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. โ€” The City of Montgomery Department of Culture Affairs hosts a Juneteenth celebration Saturday 2 pm to 6 pm. The event at the Riverfront Amphitheater offers live entertainment, food trucks vendors, a kid zone, educational presentations, and cultural art exhibits. The occasion is a celebration centered around the new federal holiday Juneteenth.

Celebrants can arrive by car share or personal vehicle. Parking in the downtown area on this Saturday will be free, same as admission to the event. Lawn chairs and coolers are welcomed at the amphitheater and along the riverfront.

“this will be a great way to celebrate the history of what Juneteenth means and how it abolished slavery after the Civil War.”

Cathy Shuford, the city’s event manager offers, “there will be a local band playing called 2nd Coming, and a surprise special guest will be making an appearance in the Riverfront Amphitheater.” Shuford and her team anticipate a crowd of 1,500 and above, adding “this will be a great way to celebrate the history of what Juneteenth means and how it abolished slavery after the Civil War.”

MONTGOMERY, Ala. โ€” The Giraffe Conservation Foundation celebrates World Giraffe Day at the Montgomery Zoo. The Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Museum both offer giraffe events and exhibits this Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

World Giraffe Day is an initiative to raise awareness about giraffes and celebrate them. It also serves as an educational tool. You can support the giraffes by making a donation to support research and conservation efforts or by going to the festival. Contributions benefit both giraffes in Africa and those at the Montgomery Zoo.

A variety of activities are on deck, including thumb-print of giraffes, giraffe feedings, and giving trees. The giraffe feeding is a major draw to many, and has a participation fee of $4, with $2 of that donated to conservation.
